Cistern Cleaning Tips & Recommendations
01
Alberta Health Services recommends all cisterns are cleaned every 3 – 5 years – unless you expect a crack or leak in your tank.
02
The potable water that is in your cistern, should be checked semi-annually for bacteria. If the test shows coliform bacteria, you should get your tank cleaned ASAP.
03
Cisterns should be cleaned after initial installation (even with no sediments at the bottom), plumbing work has been completed (i.e. replacing of valves or pumps), bacteria etc.
Tip #1: Ensure that the collars on the tanks are minimum 5” above the ground to ensure that no runoff gets in your tank.
Tip #2: The air vents that come from the collar of the tank should be a full ‘U’ shape to ensure debris doesn’t get blown down.
Tip #3: You can determine if you have a leak or crack in your tank if you see sediment coming through the taps, any discoloration in your water or a foul smell get it checked ASAP!
Tip #4: Make sure that the area around your cistern is kept clean of dog waste, grass clippings or any other yard debris to reduce the likelihood of debris getting into your cistern.
Remember: All cisterns need to be cleaned at some point! When installing your cistern, ensure it is easily accessible.
